Fake “Phnom Penh Noodle” Finally Pulled Out from the US Market

Phnom Penh: Cambodia’s Ministry of Commerce in coordination with the relevant ministries and the Cambodian Embassy in the United States have finally managed to pull out the controversial “Nam Vang Noodle” out in the market. This is following the investigation conducted after photos of the noodle circulated the social media with an image of Cambodia’s famous Angkor Wat temple. The word “Nam Vang” is a Vietnamese translation of “Phnom Penh”. Judging from the noodle’s name, it is presumed being manufactured in Vietnam.

Spokesperson of the Ministry of Commerce, Seang Thai, says they are still investigating on the source of the noodle. It was only the distributor in the US that was identified which successfully pulled-out the product out from the market. The manufacturer is still unknown. Thai has added that with the Vietnam’s Covid-19 situation, it is hard to send an investigating team to the neighboring country. He says, “If the source is known, we will have an official request to stop immediately, as this has been done in the past."

The ministry has reiterated that the use of “Phnom Penh” and the image of the “Angkor Wat” without the permission of the competent authorities of Cambodia violates the provisions of Cambodian law, agreements and international treaties. The Cambodian Embassy has ordered the importing company in the US to halt the “Nam Vang noodle” distribution otherwise, further legal action will be taken.
